Several years ago an old friend of mine from school got together with some other friends and put together an adult theme pr
om – for charity. I had seen her pictures and Facebook posts about it before and last year’s Super Hero theme was enough to tempt me and my friend Emily to don crazy ‘Super Emily’ costumes and boogie the night away with a couple hundred ‘super’ strangers. It was a blast – we were hooked and knew that come 2013, we’d definitely have to get our husbands to join us for an out-of-the-ordinary (cuz we hate to do things without a theme) date night.
When the prom rolled around this year, it also coincided with my sister’s 40th birthday. A plan begin to formulate in my little brain…how fun would it be to celebrate Hope’s birthday at the PROM!?! Now, normally Hope is not a big fan of dressing up and making a fool of herself. (You should have seen the confused look on her face when Emily and I showed up at Hickory Park in our Super Emily costumes last year… I digress) But for her big birthday she came around to the idea of it all – it was, after all, a premade party! Drinks, dancing, and fun…and all she had to do was dress up and come – perfect!

Prom night was a blast! We had a great time celebrating Hope’s birthday – treating her to a special Prom Queen status, and dancing the night away. It was great…except when I tried to force Matt to dance.
Obviously you don’t see a lot of wheel chair dancers…well, maybe YOU do, but I sure don’t. Matt was never one to do much dancing even before…pretty sure we danced like Junior High kids at our wedding. But after a few rounds of prom punch, and a well-timed ACDC song, I pulled Matt out to the dance floor.
He resisted.
He locked down his brakes.
I pulled on his hands, moving around him like a dancing fool queen. And then it happened. In the blink of an eye I was on the ground…flat on my butt in front of Matt, our hands still clasped together. Somehow, amazingly enough, Emily managed to capture it all on camera…and the look on our faces…PRICELESS!!
Now Matt would tell you this is what I get for trying to force him to dance. And maybe he’s right. But I was out there on the dance floor, with my husband – wheelchair and all -and I didn’t give two hoots. We were ‘dancing’ and having a blast. And that, my friends, is the good stuff.
